Radio frequency Ablation (RFA) {Short Note- Phase A}
Radio frequency energy can be used for tissue ablation either palliative or curative attempt to treat different cancers. it is also effective in treating benign condition, bone pain, neuralgia and cardiac arrhythmia.
Principle of RFA:
The basic method of radio frequency ablation is placing a electrode into or over the target tissue to transmit high frequency AC to the tissue ranging from 350-550 kHz. As a result of frictional moment of ions the temperature of target tissue rises higher than 100०C that causes protein denaturation and coagulation necrosis.
It has an built in sensor for automatically terminating the transmission of the AC current at a particular set point.
Ion agitation from Alternating Current causes tissue coagulation through frictional heating. Tissue desiccation increases impedance which eventually decrease current flow.
Indication:
Malignant Condition:
a. Tumor in liver parenchyma
b. Tumor in pancreas
c. Tumor in kidney, adrenal gland
d. Tumor in Lungs,Thyroid,Heart,Bone etc
Benign Condition:
a. Bone pain
b. neuralgic pain
c. cardiac arrhythmia
Advantage:
1. Non invasive procedure
2. Safe and reliable
3. Better patient compliance
4. Inexpensive
Disadvantage:
Special equipment required.
Conclusion:
The indication of radio frequency ablation will continue to grow in the future because it is inexpensive & reliable use to destroy a large tumor mass.
